Clarity and Gratitude: A Leader’s Guide to Ending the Year Well

Leadership is rarely about one big breakthrough; it’s a series of moments where clarity, responsibility, perspective, and gratitude all shape the way forward. In this post, we explore four questions every business leader should sit with as the year closes: Does your team know what they own? Do you have a guide helping you grow? What story are you writing as a leader?

And who are you grateful for along the way?

Ownership starts with clarity

Does everyone on your leadership team know what they own? It’s a simple question, but it’s often where accountability starts to unravel. Titles aren’t the same as roles. And no one can hit a target they didn’t know they were aiming for. That’s why we start with structure.

Clear roles. 5 major responsibilities. No more than that.

What would change if everyone on your team had crystal-clear ownership as we head into the end of the year?

When you want more, you need a guide

Most people don’t think we need a coach, until we realize we are struggling to get to where we want to be.

Want to swim faster? Hire a Swim Coach.

Want to eat healthier? Bring on a Nutrition Coach.

Want more out of your life? Maybe a Life Coach is best for you.

We know there’s more on the table, and want to get to it the right way. Coaching isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking better questions. Here’s one of my favorites: What do you want from your business that you’re not getting today?

The story you’re writing as a leader

Every great story follows a pattern:

A character has a problem. They meet a guide. The guide gives them a plan. Calls them to action. And it ends in success, or helps them avoid failure. It’s simple, and it’s everywhere once you notice it.

I first learned this from Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller. Since then, I’ve seen this framework play out across so many of the leadership teams I work with.

So here’s your version of the story: → What’s the problem you’re solving? → Who’s your guide? → What plan are you working from? → And what does success look like for you?

Whether you're stuck in the middle or just getting started, your next chapter is being written right now.

Gratitude shapes great leadership

As we get ready for Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking about the people who made this year what it was.

I am so grateful that my Faith is as strong as ever (with still room to grow)!

For my family, who remind me every day why I do this work in the first place.

I am grateful for My Clients who let me step into the room and be a part of their journey to getting more of what they want.

For the amazing people in my network who’ve sent kind words, referrals, and support. If we’ve crossed paths this year, thank you.

Here’s to a little rest, some reflection…and maybe a Detroit Lions victory.
